Traditions consisting of long, narrative songs are found throughout eastern parts of Europe; the Finnish epos Kalevala is one example.

The Kalevala has already been translated into more than 60 languages, so accessibility is not an issue. The Kalevala is a grand mythology and compares well with its brethren worldwide. The stories in Finnish, Swedish, Russian, Estonian, Arabic, English, Vietnamese, Hindi and Lithuanian lend a modern, relevant subtext to the ancient Kalevala. Sixteen percent of Espoo’s 214,000 residents have a native language that is not Finnish or Swedish, which are Finland’s official languages. Ending with an invocation of “the rising folk of Suomi” (the country’s name in Finnish), Lönnrot’s poem helped invent and recover the mythology of a people who had been under Swedish rule since the twelfth century and absorbed into the Russian Empire in 1809.
